As a group of Republican women, we have gathered to discuss the issue of abortion and to agree on a statement that we can support. Included in our group was anyone who wanted to participate. Some of our members identify themselves as “pro-life” and others as “pro-choice.” Within each of these groups there is a wide variation of personal opinions. We share an overriding belief, however, that agreeing on a position that can be accepted by most women in our country is an important step in healing the misunderstandings and divisions on this intensely personal decision. It is in this spirit that we set forth the following public policy statement:
We believe that a woman facing a decision whether to carry a child to full term or to terminate a pregnancy is confronting a life crisis, usually not a healthcare crisis. We recognize and respect the right of each woman to make decisions about her own body, including the right to choose whether to continue a pregnancy or not. Although the United States Supreme Court has decided that the legislative bodies of each of the several states may decide to place reasonable restrictions on this right, no state shall have the power to forbid abortion absolutely. State laws must ensure that abortion is safe, legal, and accessible, with appropriate regulations to protect the health and safety of women.
We advocate for focus on education and up-to-date prevention efforts to reduce the need for abortion including comprehensive sex education and access to affordable and appropriate contraception.
Access to comprehensive reproductive health services must include alternative options for unwanted pregnancies, prenatal care, in addition to safe and legal abortion services. Support and resources for pregnant women must include access to general healthcare services.
We have undertaken this task with the understanding that abortion is a complex and deeply personal issue, and we respect diverse viewpoints and beliefs on the matter.
Abortion policy should prioritize the health and well-being of women, respect their autonomy and rights, and seek to reduce significantly the need for abortion through education, prevention, and appropriate support services.
*Please note, this is a statement agreed upon by a large group of Republican women, but IS NOT an official position of Metro FRW or any other political organization.
